UN Climate Tech Initiative Awards USD 5 Million to Advance AI-Powered Climate Solutions
The UN Climate Change Technology Executive Committee (TEC) and the Enterprise Neurosystem have unveiled the winners of the prestigious AI Innovation Grand Challenge under the UN Climate Change Technology Mechanism Initiative. Focused on #AI4ClimateAction, this global competition sought groundbreaking AI solutions to address climate change challenges in vulnerable developing countries, including Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
Supported by prominent sponsors, including Kove, Red Hat, and Google, the competition attracted an impressive 114 innovative proposals from 62 countries across six continents, with 19 submissions from SIDS and LDCs.
Rigorous Selection Process
The evaluation process, conducted by a panel of eight judges appointed by TEC and the Enterprise Neurosystem, involved two rounds of assessments. The initial review narrowed the field to 10 finalists, and the final stage selected the top five solutions:
- AI4SIDS: An AI-Driven Climate Resilience Platform designed for SIDS.
Team Leader: Letetia Addison, Trinidad and Tobago. - Chameleon AI: A transformative platform optimizing irrigation for smallholder farmers.
Team Leader: Alinafe Kaliwo, Malawi. - Climate Smart Irrigator: A Smart Water-Food-Energy Nexus Efficiency Irrigation System.
Team Leader: Edmond Ng’walago, Tanzania. - EmTrack by ACBA Energy: A cutting-edge AI application for emissions tracking and carbon quantification.
Team Leader: Nair de Sousa, Angola. - RAICE: Precision irrigation technology for sustainable rice farming.
Team Leader: Asbina Baral, Nepal.
Shared Prizes and Global Impact
The five winning teams will share over USD 5 million in technology and services to further develop and implement their transformative solutions. The prizes include:
- Kove: USD 5 million in credits for its cutting-edge Software-Defined Memory (SDM™) technology.
- Red Hat: USD 300,000 in credits for its OpenShift AI services on AWS (ROSA).
- Google: A six-month membership in the Google Startups for Sustainable Development Program, valued at USD 40,000.
These solutions exemplify the power of innovation in addressing climate challenges, offering hope for transformative impacts in regions most vulnerable to climate change.
